The steering wheel in my car started to get wobbly at the 100km/hr zone. First, only noticeably, then gradually getting worst. I put up with it for a while until a mechanically minded friend happened to mention that an unbalanced wheel affects more than just the handling. It can throw the wheel alignment out, wear out the steering bushes, wear out the tyres and cause a whole lot of other grief to the car! (Sometimes it takes some remark from another compassionate person to wake us up to the perils of our ignorance).
So it was off to my favourite mechanic and it was at the workshop that I gained a wonderful insight into why businesses get into trouble. The first thing my mechanic did was to record all the details of the car. Starting from the obvious licence plate details to the service details and finally the questions about the out of balance state that the wheels were in. Much like the doctor checking for the ‘vital signs’. My mechanic said that the reason for this was that the more thorough the AUDIT was, the easier, quicker and cheaper it was to get the car back on the road to perform at its best.
My insight number 1 was:

Like a wheel growing out of balance, the wobbles in your business starts off small and starts to get bigger – BUT you often put up with it.
